It's hard to believe that TD Tree Days is celebrating its 5th anniversary!
With over 135,000 trees planted, we have so much to be proud of! As we embark on our fifth year, we thought we'd take a short walk down memory lane to reflect on how far we've come.
In 2010, TD Tree Days launched as TD's flagship employee volunteer initiative in Canada. Employees planted 28,000 trees at 54 events in 50 communities nationwide.
In year two, TD Tree Days grew in 2011 to 86 events, including a special planting with Wayne "The Great One" Gretzky in Vancouver. Not wanting to keep all the fun to ourselves, we invited our families and friends to join us as we worked to green communities nationwide. The program was also launched to employees in the US and in the UK.
In 2012, we expanded to Luxembourg and over 6,800 volunteers planted 40,000 trees at 138 events. In Canada, we hosted a number of unique plantings, including our first wheelchair-accessible planting for people with disabilities at the Nova Scotia Hospital. Raised-bed planters were built to make the plantings accessible to people in wheelchairs. We also held our first planting in partnership with an Aboriginal community, the Westbank First Nation, and we celebrated the South Asian community in Surrey with a community planting.
In 2013, 48,000 trees were planted at 142 events by over 7,000 volunteers – including over 2,000 youth. TD Friends of the Environment Foundation (TD FEF) worked to expand the scope of the program in terms of inclusion and diversity – mirroring TD’s corporate commitments in this area. In Canada, we worked with three leading mental health hospitals to deliver accessible and inclusive events. Our partnerships with Aboriginal communities grew to include the First Nations of Beausoleil, Fort William, and Georgina Island, where we helped transform an abandoned lot into a naturalized park for the community.
How fitting it is that wood is the traditional gift given to celebrate a fifth anniversary? To mark this milestone, we've set a goal of planting 50,000 trees at 175 sites – including a planting with the Deaf community.
To our returning volunteers, thank you for making such a tremendous impact in your community. To our new volunteers, we hope you will have a great time, and that this is the first of many years of helping to grow your local forest canopy.
We look forward to seeing you this Fall and to toasting our 5th anniversary!
